FASCIA AND HYDRATION
Denver has spent the last few weeks auditioning for Phoenix's job, and if you've felt stiffer than usual, heat itself is a mechanical factor,
not just a comfort issue.
Fascia holds a substantial share of your body's water, and that water keeps the tissue's ground substance slippery so fascial layers can glide against each other during movement. Heat increases sweat rate and accelerates fluid loss, often before you register thirst.
As hydration drops, ground substance thickens and layers that should slide start to drag instead. It's the tissue equivalent of trying to think clearly after a week of bad sleep and too many 95-degree afternoons.
Worth knowing: this isn't really about willpower or discipline around water intake. It's mechanical. Fascia needs adequate fluid to keep its ground substance loose enough for layers to glide against each other during normal movement.
When that hydration lags, glide is the first thing to go. Tissue that should move independently starts adhering instead, restricting range of motion and force transmission well before anything feels acutely "wrong."
This is exactly the mechanical problem sustained, myofascial-specific compression is built to address. At Denver Deep, our corrective, myofascial approach to Ashiatsu Massage uses broad, deep, consistent pressure through fascial planes to encourage fluid exchange and re-establish glide between layers that have gone sticky from heat and fluid loss.
Water rehydrates the system. Compression redistributes it through tissue that's already lost some slide, essentially un-sticking what the heat glued together.
What this means for you this summer:
Hydrate before activity, not just after
Electrolytes matter more with prolonged heat exposure, but don't replace total fluid intake
Rest and water fix the fluid side. They don't always restore glide once tissue has adhered
On the electrolyte front, plain water alone doesn't replace what heat takes out. We've been reaching for Ultima Replenisher on the hottest days: it covers all six electrolytes (not just sodium and potassium), skips the sugar and artificial sweeteners, and doesn't taste like you're drinking a multivitamin.
No affiliation, just a genuine daily habit worth passing along. You can read about and shop them here.
If this heat has left you feeling more baked potato than person… That's your fascia asking for attention.
